Alberta This Week

What to Expect

With the cut-off for new party memberships having taken place August 12, the United Conservative Party (UCP) leadership campaign is now one of persuasion, with campaigns holding meet and greets and other events. Last Friday the party announced that between April and the August 12 cut-off, approximately 63,000 memberships had been sold, more than doubling the size of the party to 123,000 members.

Meanwhile, there will be significant discussion in the province over the merits of a provincial police force, with leadership candidates, cabinet ministers, municipal leaders, and third parties all making their case.

Minister of Justice and Solicitor General Tyler Shandro introduced a “blueprint” for an Alberta Police Service last Tuesday.
