Alberta This Week

What to Expect

Tomorrow is the deadline for UCP leadership candidates to file their applications. To make the cut, would-be leaders need to submit 1,000 signatures of support, with 200 from each provincial region (Calgary, Edmonton, north, central, and south), as well a $50,000 deposit. With a just a day to go, six candidates – Travis Toews, Danielle Smith, Rajan Sawhney, Todd Loewen, Brian Jean, and Rebecca Schulz – have officially tossed their hats into the ring. Candidates facing tomorrow’s deadline include Leela Aheer and Jon Horsman.

Even though candidates such as Travis Toews and Danielle Smith have already been taking pointed shots at each other, you can expect things to really heat up as the aspiring premiers look to distinguish themselves from the pack. Each campaign will also start ramping up membership sales before the August 12 cut off.
